Overview
WWWord is an Add-in for Microsoft Word which automates the conversion of large documents into well-structured intranet or Internet sites. Since Word can convert documents from other formats such as WordPerfect, the Add-in can also be used to process other kinds of document.
What it Does
WWWord makes it possible for documents to be created and maintained in Microsoft Word and quickly converted into HTML as required. Thus, both printed and on-line versions of the same document can be generated from a single source. Furthermore, WWWord can be used in conjunction with Electrum's MiniHttp and MiniSearch tools, so that the documents can be distributed on CD-ROM, complete with full-text searching capability.
WWWord can handle very complex documents, and represents these more faithfully than Word's own 'Save as HTML' facility. It also adds easy-to-use navigation mechanisms to the web pages, such as tables-of-contents and cross-references.
Background
WWWord was originally developed as part of the PINS project, undertaken on behalf of the Police, where it was used to convert thousands of pages of word-processor documents into well-structured web pages. The tool has subsequently been licensed to the entire Police Service in Scotland, where it is used to convert procedures manuals, operations manuals, etc. into a form suitable for delivery over the Police intranet and on CD.
What makes WWWord different from other HTML converters (including the in-built facility in Microsoft Word) is that, rather than converting a huge Word document into one huge HTML document, it analyses the structure of the document, and generates a web of smaller documents, each of which represents a subsection within the original. These are linked together so that the structure and flow of the original document is maintained.
For example, this is a report produced by the Scottish Software Federation:
- In Microsoft Word format
- Converted using Microsoft Word's built-in HTML converter
- Converted using WWWord
