Clients IconServices : Case Studies

These are some of the projects that Electrum has completed recently. This is not an exhaustive list, but highlights some of the harder problems we've had to solve, and the solutions of which we're most proud. All of the projects listed below have lead to a significant amount of repeat business with the same client.

Technical

MessageLabs' Website
Electrum recently re-developed the Messagelabs web site with a variety of real-time virus statistics and visualisations. These are fed live data from Messagelabs' global network of email control towers.

MessageLabs' PartnerNet
During the past year, MessageLabs has built a PartnerNet web site, based on Electrum's PartnerNet software, so that it can distribute information and documentation to it's partners through an Internet portal.

Star Intranet
Star is a rapidly expanding company with over 200 employees spread across multiple UK locations. Star required new business systems to support their operational needs with the key requirements being:

  • the delivery of accurate and up to date business information
  • integration with existing business systems and processes
  • provide tools to enable easy update of the Intranet by non-technical staff

MessageLabs Virus Control Center
Electrum played a vital role in the worldwide deployment of MessageLabs' virus control infrastructure. Resold through top-tier ISPs like UUNet, this system virus scans all incoming and outgoing e-mail from a company and blocks virus infected e-mail.

Star NetTools
The NetTools suite won 1999 Internet Product of the Year at the Networking Industry Awards and was short-listed for the Computing Awards for Excellence.

Public Sector

MDC
We've developed a .NET-based dairy farm benchmarking database for the Milk Development Council (MDC). Dairy farmers can compare their farm's performance with 25,000 other farms in the UK.

Web-based Farm Management Application
The Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) realized that the Internet would provide an ideal means of communicating with their widely spread audience - Scotland's farmers. They asked Electrum to re-design and re-implement a 10-year old Farm Management System so that it could be used on-line. This has not only made the system far more responsive (farmers used to submit data and receive results by post), but it has also made the system fully automatic, removing the need for the SAC to manually enter each farmer's data.

Legal

W Green
W.Green, the Scottish law publishing company of Sweet & Maxwell, has specialised in high-quality legal publishing for well over a century, publishing an unrivalled collection of books, periodicals and encyclopedias on Scots law as well as digital products. They looked to Electrum to provide a database-driven e-commerce site to sell their products.

Scottish Police Information System
When the Scottish Police College were asked to take over the maintenance and updating of the two main reference manuals used by the Police, they realised that paper was not an appropriate medium for distributing 3000-page manuals, especially since half of the 6000 pages are changed each year. Electrum developed an automatic process whereby all 6000 pages were automatically converted into electronic form, complete with tables-of-contents, links, etc. The material can now be viewed using a standard web browser, and can be distributed on a CD-ROM. Having been installed at police forces throughout Scotland, the system allows front-line officers to access information simply by typing in a search query.
