Star Internet was set-up in 1995 and has, from the outset, been focused on providing solutions to the business sector.

Star is now established as a leading Internet provider to the business community with over 1000 business-only customers. Winner of the Internet product of the Year at the Networking Industry Awards in both 1997 and 1999, Star has a strong pedigree in product development and is committed to being at the forefront of Internet technology.

The Problem

Star needed to differentiate themselves from the mass of other ISPs, so decided to focus on value-added services to their customers that solved real business needs.

The result was Star NetTools, a suite of Internet tools including:

  • E-mail virus control
  • Fax to e-mail gateway
  • Browser based access to e-mail and fax
  • Backup
  • Usage statistics
The Solution

Star called on Electrum to develop the Academy management system for NetTools and the WebMail browser-based e-mail system.

Academy is used by Star customers to self-manage their NetTools services and by Star to manage their customers. Self-management is crucial to Star in two ways:

  • It makes their customers more satisfied
  • It makes their business more scalable and profitable

WebMail is a browser based e-mail system not unlike Hot Mail that has an integrated virus scanning facility to ensure browser based e-mail isn't an open door for virus transmission.


Outcome

The NetTools suite won 1999 Internet Product of the Year at the Networking Industry Awards and was short-listed for the Computing Awards for Excellence.
